#YYC Spotlight: Lovesky Design

Hello and welcome to another feature in the #YYC Spotlight series!

This time you’ll all be getting an inside look at what Lovesky Design is all about and trust me, it’s pretty awesome to hear all about how Kelly started her biz.

Specializing in wedding invitations and stationary, lemme just say that Kelly’s work is oh-so lovely and beautiful. Her story is both inspirational as it is fun-loving, and it’s always nice to learn about the face behind the biz!

I won’t give away the juicy parts of this feature, so get comfy and read on! Thanks Kelly for giving us an in-depth look at Lovesky Design 🙂

1. Tell me a little about yourself and your business. Where are you from? What do you do?

Hello! My name is Kelly and my business is Lovesky Design. It is a boutique design studio specializing in custom wedding invitations and stationery.

We are based in Calgary although we also cater to international orders. We love working with engaged couples who are looking for tailored invitations to match their personal style or theme.

When I’m not designing invitations or meeting clients, I’m a busy mom to a very energetic baby girl. I’m also an avid marathon runner and enjoy running outdoors and joining races.

2. How did your business get started?

Years ago I was working at a career that after 10 years, I no longer desired.

I was unsure of my career path and what I was passionate about. Around the same time, I entertained the idea of starting a business with my graphic design background but hesitated.

One day, I was on a train going downtown and I received a call that a friend suddenly passed away from a car accident. I remember crying and being reminded of how life is short, and how we should cherish each day to do what we love and choose happiness.

I thought, what would I do if I wasn’t scared? The next day, I took the first official steps to start my business and just went for it.

3. What inspires you to do what you do?

Quite simply, love.

My clients and their love stories inspire me. It truly is an honour for me to be a small part of their wedding. To share in their love story and create the most important invitation for an exciting chapter of their lives.

It makes me happy. It gives me goose bumps. I get excited for them.

I know what it’s like to find the one you’re meant to be with after the heart-wrenching search for Mr. Right. To see my couples find their happily ever after inspires me over and over again.

Is it obvious that I’m a romantic?

4. What dreams or goals are you working towards with your business?

I dream to be able to provide a platform for Lovesky brides to have their invitations match their electronic devices.

Like a user-friendly wedding website that not only looks cohesive to their invitation, but also a great platform to assist on making part of the wedding planning easier. We’re working on it!

5. If you could give one piece of advice for a budding entrepreneur or business owner in your field, what would it be?

Believe in yourself and be fearless.

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, to put yourself out there, to meet new people, to try new things.

The most powerful asset you can possess is to believe in yourself. Only then can you truly start shining.

6. Tell me three fun facts about yourself or your business.

  • How I came up with the name Lovesky for my business–warning, it’s a little cheesy! I was brainstorming for weeks for a name. I remember I was looking at the sky, thinking how my business is associated with love and weddings. So I thought about what love meant to me. “The sky’s the limit when you love.” That’s when Lovesky was born.

  • My near death experience was snowboarding at a black diamond slope. I was still a beginner and accidentally went the wrong way where I couldn’t turn back. I can’t believe I’m still alive to tell this story. It was the scariest experience of my life. I can kind of laugh at it now. A nervous laugh!

  • I was born in the Philippines. I spent half my childhood there and the other half in Brunei before moving to Canada in my teens.

7. Anything else going on with your business that you’d like Calgarians to know about?

The 2018 Lovesky Wedding Collection will be launching soon on our website.

I’m really excited about this and I hope brides will embrace it too. It’s a beautiful, lovingly curated invitation collection celebrating florals, greenery, marble and rustic elegance.

We will be at The Wedding Fair on January 2018. If you’re engaged or know someone who is, come visit our booth and say hi!

8. Where can people find you online?
